Chris X Edwards & Dennis G. Richter
Seattle, Washington to San Diego, California
Summer 1992

--------------------------

In the summer of 1992, I, Chris X Edwards, and Dennis G. Richter successfully completed two of the most grueling ordeals of our lives. The first and most mentally punishing was the "successful" completion of our very bitter campaign to obtain engineering degrees from the University of Cincinnati. The second adventure was a celebration of the completion of the first. It was to show the world that our university experience had made us rather impervious to any form of torture.

When I look back on this trip, I remember it being very tough, but as I review the numbers, I am astounded! I can hardly believe that we did what the photographic evidence suggests we must have done. Consider the following statistics:
EventDays RidingTotal DistanceDaily AverageRest Days
2000 Tour de France212255 [3630] 107 [173]2
Our ride191817 [2924] 96 [154]0
2000 Vuelta A Espana211798 [2894] 86 [138]2

Of course, we didn't encounter the Alps or the Pyrenees, although there was plenty of climbing on the rough Pacific coastline. Of course we weren't going as fast as the pace of professional racers. On the other hand, we didn't have soigneurs (personal masseurs that all professional teams have), mechanics, or a huge peloton to draft. In fact, we usually didn't have hotel rooms as we camped over a dozen times during the trip. Oh ya! (Dennis just reminded me!) Professionals don't have to carry 30kg (65lbs) of gear!

This web page is a small monument to our aggressive adventure. The pictures we took are included here as well as complete transcripts of our feeble but regular journals. As you read these documents, bear in mind our greatly reduced mental alacrity at the end of each day. But mostly, this web page is for two people - me and Dennis. It is the yield of an investment we made in our future good memories.

So to everyone who looks at these pages - enjoy and may you find inspiration. To Dennis - is this a trip, or what?!!
