In the late summer of 1997, I was on my own. Turned loose to attack the state of California while in the best shape of my life. This collection documents several particular missions. The first is my "longest day". This is where I rode from San Simeon to San Francisco in one day. The headwinds, hills, and the fact that I was riding a loaded bike make this one of my most impressive accomplishments.

A few days later, I rode to my uncle's house in Healdsburg where I waited to hear from Susan and Hanspeter. When I did, I rode north to greet them and lead them down to San Francisco and help them get ready for their trip to South America.

Then I spent a week with my friend Seth in Silicon Valley planning the most outrageous path I could find to San Diego. I had three goals: 1. I wanted to ride over the highest paved road in California, the Tioga pass at 3034m. 2. I wanted to ride the entire length of Death Valley. 3. I wanted to avoid Los Angeles to the greatest extent possible. For the most part, I did complete these objectives and I found some of the most fantastic riding of my life.
