Here is a neat little border crossing. This area is popular for hiking in the summer and nordic skiing in the winter (and doing whatever it was I was doing in April I guess...). This was on one of the trails that just happened to cross the border. I can't see much of a smuggling effort paying off in this remote place, but I'm pretty confident that if I had to get from the C.R. to the E.U. without a passport - I could easily do it - and this is where I'd come in.
