Tag 18 (near Copenhagen, DK; Wednesday 99.04.30; distance = 133.4; time = 7:26; odometer = 2066.7) -- I got up very early (4:30). I was rolling by 5:00 -- unfortunately, the winds were already against me. There was a beautiful sunrise and the coastal road was very beautiful. It was largely undeveloped (except for military bunkers every 300 m, but they were probably for WWII and didn't seem bad. So I rode steadily until I came to Trelleborg. That's a VERY nice town. Very beautiful with lots of excellent bronze sculpture. Very nice. On the way out of town, I found a tourist map sign and made my own map from it. Now that I knew where I was going, my big problem became bathroom opportunities -- none. Finally in a small town, I found a great gas station where I bought some provisions and used the excellent facilities. Onward. Most of the way was excellent, way-off-the-road bike paths. When I got to Palmo (?), I was looking at the tourist map sign there, and a woman riding by stopped and asked if I needed help (in English). That was nice. After some screwing around with trying some wrong streets, I finally found a ferry that would get me to DK. The neat part of this ferry was getting to see close-up work on the new 8 km monster bridge from Sweden to DK. Once in Copenhagen, I was mapless and clueless as to where I was. Fortunately, there was a nice tourist map nearby there, too. I took detailed notes on where I needed to go and basically drew myself a map. Off I went. First stop, change Swedish $ over. The riding here was very exciting. Zillions of people riding bikes!! There are very seriously planned bike lanes on every street. This town was really busy and interesting-looking -- maybe relatively nice weather was bringing out people. I wish I had more time to explore this town. I had chosen a long, straight ride to a campground sign on the map. I finally got there, and I was too early for the reception. I ate a bit and looked at my maps. Then I was able to pay -- I don't know how much it cost in real money, but I don't think I want to know. Then I took an excursion to the grocery store. Not a pleasant experience. I had to wait several minutes until someone else needed a shopping cart, so I could see the trick to unleashing them. I thought that big grocery store was worse than this morning's gas station. So, now I'm showered and in bed. I didn't eat well today, and I need to fix that tomorrow. Oh ya. As I tried to ride away from an intersection, I left my chain lying on the road. Great. So my hands are dyed black now, thanks to such a grungy chain, that's one link shorter today.
